My resolutions

This year I wasn't able to indulge in my usual New Year's Day ritual -- drink mimosas all day and clean my house. My kids (one home from college for the break and one returned from China for god knows how long) were both here, making it look more like a dorm room than a regular apartment. Attempting to clean would have been both fruitless and a dopey idea. So I have not been able to get the new year off to a fresh start. Instead, I have decided to make a few resolutions, which I haven't done for quite some time. Here they are, in no particular order:

* Get the hell out of the job I hate so much. (A bad job makes everything worse.)
* Save more money. (This will be possible when #1 son finds gainful employment and starts contributing to the household expenses. This will also be possible when I find a job that pays a market-rate wage, instead of the non-profit joke of a salary I make now.)
* Get my home office area set up so I finally have a good place to write. (I can't work well when my desk is facing a wall. Weird but true.)
* Continue my current trend of eating more real, unprocessed food. (This requires more cooking, but that's okay because I like to cook and so does #1 son. And he's good.)
* Try and drink a little less. (I don't drink a lot but I definitely drink more than I did before I started working at the museum.)

There. I think that looks like a good list. Now I'm feeling better. It doesn't have quite the same effect as cleaning but it will do. And I still have a bottle of champagne in my fridge.

Does this mean more shopping at Fairways and Whole Foods? I like Fairways, but not Whole Foods, oddly enough. Something about WF just grinds my gears. Don't ask me why. But Fairways... ah, Fairways, your wholesale warehouse feel, your purple cauliflower, your cold room.

That's pretty ambitious. I'm just trying not to be a crabby bitch all the time! Not entirely successfully, I am sorry to report.

I also don't like Whole Foods. It's just too yuppie-pretentious for me. I heard that the nickname for it is Whole Paycheck Foods because it's so expensive, which is another reason I won't shop there. Sadly, tragically, they are about to open a new Whole Foods right on my corner. Literally steps from my apartment. I will avoid it with every fiber of my being. Fairway...I don't shop there because, well, I don't know why. I sold my car so I wouldn't drive up to the uptown one and the other one is just a little too out of my immediate neighborhood. But I get the farmers' market on my street every Friday. And I do have a Gourmet Garage a block away where I sometimes splurge on cheese or olives or things like that. But no matter -- I am going going for real veggies and real ingredients. I'm getting into it, too! No more Hot Pockets for me! Not that I actually ever ate a Hot Pocket...but now I really won't!

I go to Fairways for their hummus. I used to live three blocks from the one on 125th (the way the streets are up on the far west side, living on 135th put me three blocks away). But I didn't shop there regularly. Just to treat myself every now and then.

I feel the same way about Whole Foods. I went into the one at Columbus Circle for some sesame oil. Swear to god, I wanted to go postal.
